Roads have reopened in Hamilton where traffic was backed up near a major shopping mall this morning as police dealt with an incident on a Waikato Expressway overbridge.

Police have resolved the incident which involved a distressed teenage girl being spoken to by police at the scene.

Waikato Police Senior Sergeant Charles Burgess said the young woman was sitting on a balustrade on the overbridge on Wairere Drive.

Officers were called by a family member at 8.30am and spent almost three hours speaking to the young woman.

The road bridge passes over the expressway near the turnoff to Wintec and The Base shopping mall.

Police said the incident was resolved before lunch and the previously closed roads including northbound lanes at the Avalon Dr/State Highway 1 on ramp and southbound lanes at the SH1/SH39 (Koura D) off ramp, were now open.

"Police would like to thank motorists for their patience and cooperation while the road was closed," a statement said.

"There is significant traffic in the area so there are likely to be continued delays. Please continue to be patient and considerate of your fellow motorists."
