Hamilton internet service provider Lightwire will offer the city ultrafast broadband from April 1.

Hamilton's first businesses will be able to connect to Ultrafast Fibre's network starting in April with residential customers able to connect to the service from July.

Additional Hamilton businesses and homes will be able to progressively connect to Ultrafast Fibre's network through their preferred broadband provider as fibre is laid in front of their premises over the next four years.

Ultrafast Fibre began constructing its fibre network in Hamilton last year and will complete the build in 2016.

Ultrafast Fibre CEO, Maxine Elliott, says the agreement with Lightwire is one of many broadband agreements in the pipeline.

"We're excited to make the announcement that Lightwire is the first Hamilton-based broadband provider that has signed up to provide ultrafast broadband to businesses, schools and homes in the city.  This is a signal to the public that this much-anticipated technology is literally days away from being reality in the city.

"In addition to Lightwire we have several other broadband providers whom we're working with to sign agreements to sell ultrafast broadband services off our network.  We'll be making further announcements over the coming months," says Ms Elliott.
