Waikato police are hot on the tail of a man who robbed a Hamilton dairy with a weapon today.

Waikato police Senior Sergeant Charles Burgess said officers were still gathering details but said it appeared a man armed with a blunt instrument entered a dairy on Palmerston St just before 10.30am today before fleeing.

The man then jumped into a getaway car. However, Burgess said officers were currently making inquiries at a Melville property where they were "speaking to some people".

No one was injured in the incident and the dairy owner was being interviewed by police.
