Men, women and children are gearing up for the October 7 New Zealand Community Trust Hamilton Half Marathon.

Run from the Flagstaff Club, the event comprises a half marathon run and walk plus 10km and 5km runs and walks - plus the Earthcare Environmental Kids' Marathon.

Entries for all events are now open online.

The event boasts a merit prize pool of $8000 and spot prizes, drawn and presented on the day, worth $15,000. All entries offer a chance to win a new Mazda 2 car.

The event supports the work of the Child Cancer Foundation.

Due to slips on the Waikato River trail, Hamilton Half Marathon organisers have mapped accurate, attractive country courses north of the city for all events.

The Earthcare Environmental Kids' Marathon is always a great success, with a huge number of children taking part. This unique event offers kids from 5-18 years a chance to complete a marathon, one kilometre at a time in the lead-up to the 2012 Hamilton Half Marathon. Children run their kilometre legs in their own time, at their own pace, prior to October 7.

They finish with a final 2.195km run within Flagstaff Park, along the actual half marathon course.

This year organisers are aiming to attract 500 youngsters to the event with the assistance of Kelly Sports.

Organisers are keen to attract recreational runners and walkers and first time competitors to the event. Training schedules are available on the website to assist in preparation for any of the distances.

In addition to New Zealand Community Trust and Earthcare Environmental the Hamilton Half Marathon team is grateful for sponsorship from New Balance, Classic Hits, Brian Perry Civil, Downer, Fairview Motors and Dole.
