Former Waikato cop to fight drink-driving charge

A former Waikato policewoman plans to fight a charge of drink driving after being caught allegedly nearly four times the legal limit.

Ranui Ria Iwa Hopa, 42, of Hamilton, was listed in court documents as a police officer, however when questioned, police confirmed she left the force in 2013.

A police spokeswoman said they would be making inquiries as to why she was listed as an officer on court documents.

Hopa, also known as Ranui Mead, is the owner of Thrift'd Streetwear in Hamilton's Barton St.

Hopa pleaded not guilty to driving with an excess breath alcohol level of 911mcg on December 10 last year.

She had been driving on Ruakura Rd.

The legal limit is 250mcg.

Hopa, who wore sunglasses throughout her court appearance, represented herself in court this morning when she pleaded not guilty.

However, she told community magistrate Ngaire Mascelle a lawyer will represent her at her next appearance.

Mascelle remanded Hopa at large to reappear on April 11.

The charge has a maximum penalty of three months' prison or $4500 fine.
