Waikato police are hunting for the driver of a stolen car involved in a chase over the weekend, one of many in the district.

In what police have described as "lots of drivers living on the edge," several arrests were made after drivers were busted reaching speeds of more than 180km/h.

On Friday night two cars were clocked racing each other at 189km/h on the Waikato Expressway near the Te Rapa overbridge.

Both vehicles were believed to have been impounded.

Just hours later, about 1am Saturday, two men decided to race their Subarus on the Waikato Expressway.

However, it all unravelled under the watchful eye of a "seasoned senior constable" who stopped them.

The pair were caught speeding at more than 140km/h. Both cars were impounded and the drivers' licences were confiscated. Two men will appear in court in the near future, police wrote on their Facebook page.

The early hours of Sunday, in Victoria St, Hamilton, a car with five teenage boys was stopped at a drink drive checkpoint, with the driver failing the test.

Instead of getting processed, he has then fled in his car with his four young passengers inside, running three red lights in the process.

The teen blew 618mcg. The legal limit for under 20s is zero. He lost both his licence and his car.

"Five young lives. His passengers were more obnoxious that than the driver," police wrote on their Facebook post.

The next involved a stolen car from Te Awamutu whose driver led police on a chase, reaching speeds up to 180km/h.

Due to the unsafe speeds police let the car go, however it was found in Pirongia a few hours later.

"No doubt a few of you reading this would have come across some of the action throughout the weekend," police wrote on Facebook.

"My [advice] is that if ever you are confronted with a car taking off at speed, followed by blue and red flashing lights, just do your best to pull right out of the way as we really do hate to think of anything bad happening to our innocent community.

"We are especially looking for two witnesses that may have come across such a pursuit around Kihikihi [Sunday night 8.45pm]. A black 4WD and another vehicle would have had a close call on the intersection with Whitmore St and Rolleston St with a maroon-coloured Honda.
