Electricity lines company WEL Networks will this year return $21.8 million in discounts to Waikato customers.

"A typical residential or small business customer will receive an average discount of $253, including GST," says WEL Networks chief executive Dr Julian Elder.

Customers with an active and non-vacant connection to WEL's Central Waikato networks at 5pm on March 31 will receive the discount, regardless of which local retailer supplies them.

"This will make a difference for our customers during the colder winter months."

Since 2003, WEL Networks has returned more than $200 million in discounts to its customers.

"As a community-owned organisation, we keep the lights on in the Waikato, invest in a smarter future for the Waikato through new technologies like our Smart Network and Ultrafast Fibre and are proud to offer the annual discount to our customers," says Dr Elder.

The discount will be itemised on customers' April, May or June electricity bill and is based on a proportion of the lines charges incurred at each address during the previous year.
