A drive to get more Hamilton dogs registered and microchipped is being run in March by Hamilton City Council.

Hamilton dog owners can register and microchip their dog for $35 during four dates in March, saving $80. This only applies to dogs who have not been registered before.

On each Thursday in March, a different community centre will host a mobile registration and microchipping service.

The mobile service will run from 12.30pm to 3pm at Melville Community Centre (March 1), Western Community Centre (March 8), Pukete Neighbourhood House (15 March) and Fairfield Community hall (March 22).

Council's animal education and control manager Susan Stanford says the programme is about making it easy for dog owners.

"This is a chance for our team to get out into the community and make it as easy as possible for owners to register their dog if they haven't done so before," says Ms Stanford.

"We know there are quite a few dogs in our city which aren't yet registered and it really makes it difficult to track down their owners and return them home if they end up in our care."

The pro-rata registration applies to 30 June 2018. All dog owners are required to have their dog registered and microchipped under the Dog Control Act.
