NZ Herald Headlines | Thursday, January 29, 2026. Trump looks to de-escalate Minneapolis as Rubio defends Maduro operation.

Police are investigating a serious assault in Hamilton overnight that has left a man with critical injuries.

Residents on Lyon St are waking up this morning to find police swarming their area as an investigation is launched into how the injured victim came to suffer his injuries.

The man was found by officers on Avalon Drive around 2.40am - he had “significant injuries consistent with an assault”, Detective Sergeant Johnathon O’Byrne said.

“He was transported to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.”

Byrne said police were also investigating a “linked violent incident” which happened around midnight at a property on Lyon St, which is near Avalon Drive.

“Scene guards are in place at the Lyon St property, and nearby residents can expect to see a police presence this morning as we conduct further inquiries.”

Many residents say they did not hear anything untoward overnight and are waking up to news of the incident.

Officers were not actively looking for the victim when he was found, the police spokesperson said.

Police are requesting the public’s help with their inquiries. Anyone with information that could assist is asked to call 105, quoting file number 260129/1915, or provide information anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
