A person has been critically injured in a crash which occurred northwest of Rotorua, police say.

Police were called to the two-vehicle crash, which closed State Highway 5 at Tapapa, about 6.05am.

A Hato Hone St John spokesman said two people were taken to Waikato Hospital, one by road in a moderate condition and one by helicopter in a critical condition.

SH5 between Whites Rd and Hardwoods Rd has now reopened.
