The future of Hamilton cemeteries is up for discussion, as council reviews its cemeteries management plan and invites the public to make suggestions to a proposed plan.
The current Internment Facilities Crematorium Management Plan 1999-2008 is out of date; the new management plan will provide direction for future use, maintenance, development, and protection of Hamilton's three cemeteries.
Councillor Angela O'Leary said it was always a topical discussion and additional facilities could be looked at.
"Natural burials come up and different denominations come up, and I'm really keen on finding if we can enhance the building out at [Hamilton Park Cemetery]. I've heard for years 'there is nowhere to make a cup of tea!' when the celebrant is there and people gather. It is such a beautiful place. It would be nice, of course if the public wants, to have more furniture (seating), because people take picnic rugs and sit with their lost loved ones and it is really special. I was blown away by how beautiful it was."
Staff will report back in the November Strategy and Policy Committee with a draft plan.
There will be a public open day at Hamilton Park Cemetery at Newstead where people can receive background information, make comments, and discuss ideas. Written suggestions close at the end of September.
