Hamilton City Council has done a U-turn on plans to make suburban streets 40km/h areas.

At this week's strategy and policy committee meeting, councillors agreed for staff to report to a full council meeting next week with a revised Speed Limit Bylaw for adoption which will reflect the submissions received. It also sees no collector roads drop from 50 to 40km/h.

Council says it is sticking with its plan to make neighbourhood streets safer but is promising to step up consultation and communications for future works after receiving mixed reactions to some of the areas during recent consultation.

Safer Speed Areas planned for Grandview, Fairview Downs, Pukete, Gillies and part of Forest Lake were removed from the schedule of changes and will remain at 50km/h.

Modifications have been suggested to keep Mardon Rd and Insoll Ave at 50km/h but for the rest of the area to go to 40km/h, similarly keeping Holland Rd at 50km/h but surrounds at 40km/h, while the Woodstock area would see Fairfield Rd stay at 50km/h.

Safer Speed Areas will also roll out next year in Melville, key residential streets in the central city, around Tui-Minogue Park, Clarkin and Enderley areas.

Proposed 30km/h limits in Frankton have been confined to Commerce St and part of Kent St.
