Occupants have escaped a burning house in Coromandel overnight.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said crews were called to a single-story house on Kopu-Hikuai Rd at 2.37am.

The house was well-involved in fire when crews arrived, he said.

The fire was 6m by 8m and has been extinguished.

Pauanui Volunteer Fire Brigade said in a social media post multiple fire crews from Pauanui, Tairua, Onemana, and Puriri responded to a house fire in Hikuai.

“The occupants managed to escape the blaze and call for help.

“Crews have spent the morning extinguishing the fire and have since left the scene,” the post said.

“This serves as a timely reminder to ensure you have working smoke alarms and have an escape plan in place.”

The Fire and Emergency spokesman said an officer in charge at the scene would determine the origin of the fire.
