A man caught rummaging through a bin outside a Hamilton business was arrested with thousands of dollars of cash and a haul of suspected drugs and paraphernalia.

Police said a member of the public alerted them after the man was seen going through the large rubbish bin at the back of a business on Kent St about 1.30am.

"As things turned out their concerns were well founded," Sergeant Darin Frost said.

"Officers found the man with a knife, three meth pipes, other utensils and a substance that was found in circumstances that makes it likely to be amphetamine or methamphetamine.

"This white powder will be subject to forensic analysis which will determine the final outcome in relation to charges."

Mr Frost said police also searched the man's car and found a small box in the front passenger footwell containing more than $15,000 in cash.

He said the arrest spoke volumes about the importance of seeing something and acting by calling 111.
