Firefighters cut the young woman from the vehicle after the crash in Hamilton today

A 17-year-old woman was cut free from a car after it spun out of control in downtown Hamilton this afternoon.

The teenage front seat passenger was trapped by her legs in the black Nissan Gloria after police said it lost control leaving a roundabout at Tristram and Thackeray Sts in the Hamilton central business district.

The car was heading south when the crash happened at 12.06pm in wet conditions.

Hamilton District Command Centre Senior Sergeant David Raffan said the car spun around and hit a tree in the middle of the road.

Hamilton firefighters cut the woman from the car.

Raffan said the woman was taken by St John Ambulance to Waikato Hospital for assessment.

The female driver of the car, thought to be in her early 20s, also suffered minor injuries but did not require medical attention.

Raffan said police were still investigating.
