Cordons in central Te Awamutu have been lifted after the New Zealand Defence Force "made safe" a suspicious package left outside the local police station.

The package was found on Roche St around 6.10pm, with nearby streets being evacuated as a precaution.

Roche St, Walton St and Redoubt St - the block of streets around the police station - were cordoned off and the public advised to stay away from the area.

Armed police were in the area and Inspector Jeff Penno said the bomb squad was called in to investigate the package.

"The object has been made safe by the NZDF Explosive Ordnance team," a police spokeswoman said.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the nature of the object and the circumstances leading to its discovery on Roche Street this evening."

Anyone who has information was asked to contact police on 111 or anonymously contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
