Traffic is clogged up on State Highway 1 south of Auckland after a nose to tail this afternoon.

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed two people were hurt in the 3.40pm crash in the southbound Waikato Expressway lanes between Hampton Downs and Whangamarino Rd.

The pair suffered minor and moderate injuries respectively and were taken by ambulance to Waikato Hospital.

NZTA confirmed before 5pm that there were significant delays in the southbound lanes between Meremere and Paddy Rd. Traffic was also heavy northbound from Te Kauwhata.

A police spokeswoman said officers left the scene about 5pm.

A motorist emailed the Herald a photo of a long line of traffic in the area.

Jarrad Hurrell wrote that traffic was "screwed" at Hampton Downs.

"[I've travelled] 1km in 25mins."
