Armed police incident closes Mellsop Road in Parawera near Arapuni

Cordons are in place near Arapuni Road in rural Waikato.

Armed police are responding to an incident at Parawera, in rural Waikato between Arapuni and Kihikihi.

Police were called just before 12.50pm.

“Mellsop Road, Parawera, is currently closed due to a police incident,” a spokesperson said.

“Some staff are armed as a precaution.”

Cordons are in place near Arapuni Road and the public is asked to avoid the area.

“We’ll release more info when we are in a position to do so, as this one is still ongoing and unfolding.

“There is not believed to be any risk to the wider public at this time,” a spokesperson said.

Hato Hone St John was called to the scene at 1.36pm.

Te Awamutu College informed parents that due to the road closure, Bus 13 will be detoured via Puahue Road and Monckton Road.

“Any students who get off the bus before Parawera Marae on Arapuni Road, need to be picked up from school,” the school said on social media.
