A 35-year-old Hamilton man has appeared in court facing rape charges.

The man, who was given name suppression when he appeared in the Hamilton District Court today, was remanded without plea by community magistrate Ngaire Mascelle on three charges after an alleged incident in the city overnight Tuesday.

The man faces charges of sexual violation, detaining a woman with intent to commit sexual violation and assaulting a female between November 8 and 9.

The man, who was helped by an interpreter, was remanded in custody to reappear tomorrow so that a lawyer can be assigned and another interpreter organised.

The alleged incident occurred in the suburb of Fairview Downs.
