Where is book thief Moriarty?

Hamilton children are being asked to help solve a summer mystery at the city's libraries.

They'll be on the case with fun characters Holmes, Watson and Mycroft as they attempt to find Moriarty who has stolen all the best books.

The Great Book Mystery - Te Pirikoko Whakaharahara o te Pukapuka - is a free summer reading programme for 5- to 12-year-olds.

It starts on December 15 and runs for six weeks as participants help solve the mystery of the best books to read over summer.

Places are limited and children wanting to sign up should register at their local library from tomorrow.

All participants will be issued with a Great Mystery folder which is their passport to rewards, activities, entertainment and the finale party.

Children's and teens' librarian Su Woollett says the aim is to encourage children to continue reading during the summer school holidays.

"They will sign up, be given a folder of what's involved, start reading and then talk to a librarian. It will be a lot of fun for everyone," she says.

A number of special events are also planned as part of the programme, including storyteller Jenn Douglas, pirates' parties and making Christmas decorations.

Successfully solving the mystery will entitle children to attend the finale party in January.
