A sister city of Christchurch, home to Boeing and Starbucks, the Emerald city of Seattle is the elevated jewel of the Pacific northwest.

Striking views of snow-domed mountains, the seafood aromas of waterfront eateries, posh nosh and upscale shopping are essential Seattle snapshots.

But it's the wide variety of urban experiences that combine to make Seattle one of America's most distinctive cities. For an introductory panorama, survey the horizon fromthe Space Needle. Built in 1962 for the World Fair, the tower is 182m high and was built to withstand hurricane-force winds and earthquakes. Fifty years on, it's amazing how futuristic it still looks, and the history gallery on the observation deck underscores how the landmark is still an enduring object of affection.

Pike Place Market has much to crow about.

Motivational books and workplace manuals have been written about Pike's working ethos, because it's such a fun place to work. Bag a bargain at the bustling market from the selection of local produce, fish, flowers, art and more.

Watching the workers throw fish and listening to street musicians play is quintessentially Seattle.

If historic architecture floats your boat, visit Smith Tower in Pioneer Square. The Chinese Room is an exquisitely designed affair and it's worth the few dollars to ride to the top of Seattle's first skyscraper.

Music lovers must include a trip to Experience Music Project to take in the past, present and future of music. With daring architecture and an absorbing gallery of music history - featuring local lad Jimi Hendrix - EMP is great fun.

Check out the hip arts scene at the Seattle Art Museum, plus the Olympic Sculpture Park for its edgy creativity.

Yes, it rains a lot in Seattle, but you'll never be far from a trusty Starbucks store to perk you up. Residents will assure you that there is a soothing quality to the gentle rain and, when the sun shines, it's a vividly green-looking city.

No matter the weather, commune with nature at Discovery Park, a charming green space with views of Puget Sound. Pack a picnic for a hillside munch or cut loose on the many walking trails.

In recent years Seattle has become quite the sports mecca, with fans of the Mariners and Seahawks being ranked among the most raucous in the nation.

The Mariners' Safeco Field is one of the most photogenic places to catch a baseball game on a pleasant evening from April to September.

If you're visiting in winter months, the Seahawks have the loudest stadium in the NFL, so bring your earplugs and cheer along.
