We're experiencing a fashionable blast from the past as 40s-, 70s- and 60s-inspired fashion from our favourite designers dominates the runway this season. Unfortunately, some of us have been left kicking ourselves for clearing wardrobes of pieces from the past that we could be wearing now. And if you can't head to your mum's wardrobe to raid her collection, then fear not, we're straying away from main street stores in our search of the perfect vintage attire.

Shopping isn't always easy when you're looking for that special piece.

In fact, we're not going to deny the fact that vintage shopping takes the challenges of retail therapy to the next level. Although there's always the chance of stepping inside a shop and spotting a to-die-for piece instantly, generally hunting for vintage finds takes dedication, hard work and time.

Before you step foot inside the store, instead of having your mind set on one particular piece, allow yourself to be open to other options - you never know what kind of hidden gems you may find from decades long gone.

Some higher-end recycle stores are a breeze to browse through (but still require some serious time commitment). However, if you're going to the City Mission, Salvation Army or Hospice op shops, then be prepared to get stuck in.

The hard work can be halved if you grab a friend and give each other a hand to find the pieces you may both be hunting for.

Dedicate a day to the task ahead and you're bound to find some new favourites for your wardrobe, not to mention bargains.

As you rummage through racks and racks of clothes, keep in mind that fashion is a cyclical creature. Don't just look for pieces from decades past, consider other current trends. - More than likely, they've all been in fashion at some point in time.

Keep your eyes peeled for on-trend prints such as block colours and polka dots. Vintage stores are definitely the perfect place to pick up a midi-skirt or two - the new length we're all coveting at the moment.

Once you find those must-have pieces, don't fret if the style isn't absolutely perfect. We all know some garments from the past can be a little dowdy, but never underestimate the power of a good tailor. If you're feeling extra creative, don't be afraid to experiment with garments yourself, especially if you've picked up a bargain.

When you've managed to stock up your wardrobe with great vintage finds, use the leftover money you've saved by indulging in the perfect complement to your new outfit - accessories.
