SoundBites: Openside, Magic Factory, The Bads, October, Kings

Openside filmed their new video in the Mojave Desert.

Auckland's Openside will be hoping their short, sharp new single I Feel Nothing can match the success of their last single Letting It Out.

That track hit number one on the New Zealand Viral Spotify chart and has had nearly 90,000 views on YouTube.

I Feel Nothing, at just two and a half minutes, is a bubbly emo-pop song that wouldn't look out of place on a Paramore setlist.

It had more than 15,000 streams on its first day of release and its video, below, has had thousands of views in just a few days.

The video was filmed in the middle of California's Mojave Desert with director Shae Sterling (Stan Walker, Jamie McDell, Brooke Fraser).

"The Rolling Stones spent six months tracking Exile on Main Street in the South of France, Magic Factory spent one sweaty afternoon doing the same thing in a living room in Glenfield."

So reads the publicity for Magic Factory's debut album Working With Gold, released last week with a performance at Whammy alongside Tender Moonlight, The Vietnam War and Ounce.

The Auckland band, who've been together just over a year, are described as a "cauldron" of late 60s, early 70s country rock & roll, with influences including CCR, The Band and Dr Hook.

The Bads this week wound up their album release tour in Whangarei and shared the video for their title track Losing Heroes.

The song pays tribute to musicians the band says shaped their musical landscape.

Its first verse, below, is interwoven with song titles from Bowie, Prince, Dave McArtney, Graham Brazier and Marc Bolan.

"Ladies in blue, and red shoes, Doves crying in the gutter, Over you, That telegram I sent, Is trying to reach you."

October has followed up the song Cherry Cola with her new single Pure.

The Kiwi singer, aka Emma Logan, has been compared with Siouxsie Sioux, Bauhaus and The Jesus and Mary Chain.

She says: "Everything I make sonically and visually needs to be an honest reflection of me, what I like, and what I don't like."

Since the release of Cherry Cola, October has scored support and touring slots with Broods, Maala, Lontalius and Young Lean.

Kings has shared another track from his upcoming album Chapter One.

HYLMN (How You Like Me Now) follows the release last Friday of Kush Rolled x Cup Filled.

The track is built on a sax refrain and details Kings' beginnings and his journey to the top.

Chapter One is due out November 3.
