Because I run four times a week and have completed a few half-marathons, I thought I knew a lot about running.

But reading How to Run, written by one of the world's most successful marathon runners, Paula Radcliffe, I realised I knew very little.

This book took me back to basics, and taught me about race preparation, diet, equipment, training and techniques.

It has enabled me to revise my running style and I have picked up some invaluable tips while on the way to attempting my first marathon.

How to Run is ideal for novices and for experienced runners who have pounded the roads for years and are looking to make up that bit of time during their next marathon.

Radcliffe has won several London Marathons and the Chicago and New York Marathons and won gold in the women's marathon at the Helsinki World Championships.

She is the reigning world champion and record-holder in the women's marathon.

She shares her knowledge using clear, well-organised and illustrated examples.

Radcliffe has also included effective and manageable training programmes for runners attempting 10km, half-marathon and marathon events.

There are tips on speed work and strategies for racing on the day as well as cross-training ideas.

Because so many women are now hitting the road, the guide includes a special section on matters that include diet, exercising while pregnant and coping with menopause.

Radcliffe has provided an in-depth but easy-to-read guide to everything you need to know about running.
