What can I do about a sad-looking patch of chives?
Divide the clump and replant in small groups of about nine bulbs, choosing a fresh position in good soil. Full sun is best, with good drainage to avoid bulb rot. Black aphids are sometimes a problem, but can be deterred
with soapy water. If rust occurs, cut back the chives to about 5cm from the ground - new growth is usually rust-free. Chives die down in cold winters, but look closely and you will see green shoots underneath.
When should I prune my quince tree?
In July/August if you must. Although quince trees are related to apples, they need less pruning. Fruit is borne on spurs at the tip of the previous summer's growth, so excessive pruning will reduce the crop. Unless the tree has grown too large for your garden, stick to just taking out weak, dead or spindly growth. Suckers at the base of the main trunk should also be removed.
The ancient Persians dubbed the quince a rose of the desert.
