When planting a camellia hedge, how should I space the plants?
About 1m apart. For a hedge of uniform height and growth, choose plants of the same variety. If you prefer a more informal look go for a mix, but aim for varieties with similar growth habits. When planting, dig
a hole much wider than the container and twice as deep, filling the bottom half of the hole with a mixture of soil and compost plus a handful of slow-release fertiliser. Pruning and shaping can start immediately.
What can I use to make liquid fertiliser?
Seaweed, comfrey, nettles, dock, lawn clippings or animal manure. Place animal manure in a sack and suspend in water for three weeks, diluting to the colour of weak tea before use. Seaweed is best left in water for a month, providing you chop it and stir well. Plant-based liquid can be used after a day or two.
Plant-based fertilisers can be sprayed on foliage or applied to the soil, but animal-based liquid manures are for soil application only.
