When is the best time to cut back large feijoa trees to avoid them sending out multi-shoots?
Do it now; pruning feijoas in early summer encourages multiple branch growth (which is what you want for younger trees). Note that feijoas fruit on the outside of the plant on new
growth, so aim for an open vase shape to encourage bird pollination and let in sunlight to ripen the fruit. Also remove any weak branches and low-growing ones that touch the ground. Heavy pruning reduces fruiting for a time.
Is now a good time for taking pansy cuttings?
Yes, just about any time of the year will do. Choose a healthy plant and snip off shoots 5-7cm long, preferably just below a leaf node. Remove lower leaves as well as any flowers or flower buds then dip in rooting hormone if you have some (opinions differ as to whether this makes much difference). Dibble a hole in your potting mix or shaded garden bed and insert the cuttings, keep watered and wait for new growth.
