Should I prune roses now or next month?
July is best in mild districts but as long as a month later in colder climes. The aim is to prune just before new growth starts - too early and new shoots are at risk of frost damage. But roses are tough
and the main thing is to do it.
Cut out dead, damaged and tired old branches, using loppers if necessary.
Trim back strong younger branches by a third and then remove inward-facing shoots, making slanting cuts just above a bud.
My camellia has pretty flowers but they stay on the bush and look scruffy when they die. is this normal?
Yes, it's down to the variety of camellia. But you can deadhead the bush by giving the spent flower a twist with one hand while supporting the stem beneath it with the other so you don't damage the growth tip. This gives more space for other blooms as well as discouraging camellia petal blight. Don't put the dead flowers in the compost.
