Where would I find fresh turmeric, and will it grow in my garden?
Asian food stores sometimes sell fresh turmeric rhizomes, and if you live in the warmer parts of New Zealand they can be planted 12cm deep ina sheltered spot. Rhizomes and leaves can be eaten, but it may take several seasons before you get a decent harvest. Choose plump tubers with plenty of eyes. Spring is the best time for planting as turmeric dies down in the winter.
When should I try rhododendron cuttings?
February is a good month. Fill a pot with propagating mix then take semi-mature tip cuttings 5cm to 10cm long. Remove lower leaves and dip cuttings in rooting hormone. Make holes in the mix and insert cuttings. Firm in and water; cover the pot with a plastic bag - make a support from coat-hanger wire so it doesn't collapse. Place in good light but away from direct sun, keep moist and wait three to 12 months for roots to form. Harden-off before planting out.
