Director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Inception) has developed a reputation for putting together movies on a grand scale.

Simple and straightforward has never been enough for Nolan, who likes to challenge our intellect and our senses with what he puts on screen.

Interstellar is a science-fiction journey like no other.

There are no weird or wonderful aliens to be found, just a search for a new world to replace the fast-decaying Earth.

But be prepared to test your imagination and understanding as the story unfolds.

Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) is a farmer trying to raise two children in increasingly difficult circumstances.

The world is fast becoming toxic as plants and crops die and the air becomes more difficult to breathe.

When Cooper, a former Nasa pilot, stumbles upon a secret Nasa research centre, he is seen as a solution to the world's problems.

Alongside scientist Brand (Anne Hathaway), Cooper must pilot a spacecraft that goes in search of a new world in which to live.

Cooper and his crew must go through a wormhole into a new galaxy and explore potentially habitable planets.

Reluctant to leave his children behind, Cooper is told he will return when the mission is complete.

And so we begin a journey into space -- galaxies, wormholes, gravity and time relativity.

It is here that Chris Nolan comes into his own, with stunning imagery and shot construction.

The crew visits a watery planet and narrowly escape with their lives.

Then it is to a frozen planet where a previous scientist had gone.

Their hopes of finding a new oxygen-filled planet are fast fading.

But all of this search is just building up to a finale that is impossible to see coming.

We are challenged to understand what is before our eyes and to make sense of it.
