If you like fast-paced, edgy one-liners, this one is for you: one of the world’s best-loved comedians, Jimmy Carr, is back on tour with a brand-new show, Jimmy Carr: Laughs Funny, and it’s coming to New Zealand in January.

The tour kicks off in Invercargill on January 7 and finishes in Auckland with a newly announced show at the Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre on January 29, after the previous night’s Spark Arena performance sold out in double-quick time.

Critics continue to praise Carr, with the Guardian calling him a “comedy hero” and the Independent saying he is a “world-class comedian”.

Many New Zealand towns and cities will host multiple performances, including early and late shows on the same night or on consecutive evenings.

Tour promoters Bohm Presents issued a familiar caveat ahead of the show.

“Jimmy tells jokes, and jokes are like magnets – they attract some people and repel others,” they said in a release.

“Some are repelled by Jimmy’s dark brand of comedy.

“This show is not for them. But if it’s the kind of thing you like, then this is [for you].”

A household name in the UK and one of the biggest-selling comedians in the world, Carr consistently performs to capacity crowds.

His last show, Terribly Funny, was seen by more than 1.2 million people across 45 countries, including New Zealand, during its tour – making it one of the biggest international stand-up tours ever.

Thanks to Bohm Presents, readers can be in the draw for tickets to see Carr live in Hamilton.

While his stand-up comes with a warning label, Carr’s website notes there is more to the man behind the jokes.

Interviews reveal a thoughtful side, with discussions ranging from mental health to happiness, success and imposter syndrome.

One of his quotes frequently shared through social media is that people are “jealous of what you’ve got. They’re not jealous of how you got it”.

A Cambridge graduate, he is well known in New Zealand for hosting 8 Out of 10 Cats, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and The Big Fat Quiz of the Year, the latter show has also featured New Zealand comedian Rose Matafeo.
