In the ground
Get a list of the bare-rooted fruit trees your garden centre will be selling and make your choices carefully. Check their requirements and dig the holes and have the stakes and fertiliser ready.
Flavours to come
Plant garlic, shallots and asparagus crowns in soil that has been
cultivated then enriched with well-rotted manure, compost, mulch and general garden fertiliser.
Fend off the chill
When frost strikes, as it's the thawing, rather than the freezing, that damages your plants, try putting a sheet of newspaper over a frosted plant to keep the sun off for a bit longer. And don't be tempted to prune frost-damaged parts.
Cut only if you must
Once deciduous trees and shrubs have lost their leaves you can prune them. But don't do it unless there's some benefit for you or the plant.
