Make early start
Water newly transplanted plants early in the day to give the water time to soak away. Waterlogged plants can freeze overnight.
Colourful boost
Give your winter garden a boost with polyanthus, pansies, Iceland poppies and the like. It's a great way to add colour that will carry
you into spring.
Don't be too hasty
The transition from warm greenhouse to cold soil and chilly outdoor temperatures is a shock, so harden off new seedlings before transplanting into the garden. Use a cold frame, raising the lid to give increased exposure to garden conditions, or a cloche, removed for longer periods each day. Otherwise take your seedlings out for the day and bring them back inside at night.
Fruitful task
Fertilise all your fruit trees. Spread the fertiliser evenly over the root zone, keeping it away from trunks.
