In the trenches
If you have trees and shrubs you want to move come winter, trench around them now. It'll help them to make the move more successfully.
Blooming bulbs
There's no instant gratification in planting spring-flowering bulbs but do it anyway you'll be surprised and pleased with your efforts
in just a few months' time.
Feeding frenzy
Trim back anything that's leggy, straggly or just too big, provided it's not going to flower anytime soon. Feed shrubs like camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas for fabulous winter blooms.
Winter onions
Fill the top of a shallow pot with spring onions and pull them as you need them. You can start picking them when the plants are still quite small.
