Jump-start on salads

Try to get lettuce seeds in before it gets too hot. There are some interesting combos available that'll give you a blend of salad leaves. Sow seeds every few weeks to ensure a constant supply.

Spring clean

Give ornamental plants a spring clean-up spray to deal to rust, black spot, insect pests and mites.

Appealing upstarts

Broad bean flowers should start to form pods as temperatures warm up. Pick pods when they're young and throw a few flowers into your salads.

Helping hand

When flower buds start to develop on roses apply a light dressing of sulphate of potash. Its role is to harden spring growth and provide substance and colour to the bloom.
