Plant now
Hit the garden centre - it's planting time. It's still warm but the ground is moist so you can get your evergreens in. Make sure you stake everything against autumn winds. And you're right on the cusp for getting most spring bulbs in, although tulips can be planted
through to mid-winter.
Neat and tidy
Clean up all those fallen leaves - not just for looks, but to pile up for leaf mould. Leave them lying around and they'll damage your lawn, encourage moss and provide a nice hotel for slugs and snails.
Loosen soil
Lightly rake over soil to give a good, friable surface for sowing or planting, and undo any compacting from walking on the soil when it's damp.
