We love rainbows. We love painting them, drawing them, wearing them and we have found a way to eat them.

We made some rainbow jellies for Charlie's birthday party. They included a cola stripe in place of the blue, which was our take on the rainbow for this weekend.

We made the jellies over the course of three days - giving each colour enough time to set before we put the next one on, and we used jars so we could see all the colours.

These are a really fun treat to share with your friends. Everyone loves jelly and it's a really economical way to feed a bunch of kids a great sweet treat. Packets of jelly are under a dollar, and we were able to put together 10 rainbow jellies for less than $10 - not bad!

What you'll need

  • Jelly - strawberry, orange, lemon, lime, blueberry, blackcurrant.

  • Jars - raid the recycling bin. Ours were courtesy of our lovely friend Emma.

How to make it

  • Start with the colour you'd like to be at the bottom of your rainbow and mix according to directions on the packet. Pour evenly into jars. Work out how many colours you want, and how much you can pour in of each colour.

  • Refrigerate the jars - we found we could add a colour in the morning, and by the afternoon we were ready to add another. This meant a six-colour rainbow could be put together over three days.

About Jane

Crafting ought to be my middle name. Happily (for me), I seem to have passed my craft-mad genes on to my children - Charlie, 7, and Ella, 5. We all love making things, so we do loads of crafting together. It's our happy place.

For me, nothing beats crafting for an easy, relaxing, calm and sociable means of entertaining my kids.
