Jumpsuits are one of those things. You either love them or you hate them. Or you hate them but then they start to grow on you until finally you catch yourself buying one on sale at Max on your lunch break.

When they first started turning up in the shops, I thought jumpsuits were some kind of awful, retro-ironic fashion statement. The kind of thing that no one ever wears, except desperate celebrities.

Then I saw them being paired with blazers and strapless styles being worn with gorgeous, bright, chunky jewellery. And I started to feel a bit more positive about them. I saw Kim Kardashian - of all people - in a flowing, drapey style that looked a bit like a dress - but more fashionable.

Now, I can't get enough. They are easy to wear, they look great dressed up or down and there's something really elegant and slimming about the styles that are cut well.

If you're tall, you can get away with wide leg or slim cut varieties. Shorter women should stay with styles with less fabric.

And unless you're tiny, steer well clear of any jumpsuits with added material around the middle. It's quite easy to veer from sleek and chic to frumpy in an all-in-one.

It's important that you get a jumpsuit that fits really well. There's nothing flattering about one that is too tight - quite apart from the comfort factor. Playsuits are also in lots of shops for summer. These cute, all-in-one short sets are perfect for the beach, but I don't think they work in the office.

Accessorise your jumpsuit in the same way you would a maxi dress. Pair it with a cardigan, wrap up in a blazer and pile on a bit of jewellery to add interest. Layering makes the look a bit more subtle.

Unless it's really understated, stay away from patterns. All-black is the way to go to avoid looking like you've forgotten to get dressed, although some of the jewel colours also look fabulous.

Match the width of your heel to the width of your pants - wide leg pants go with wedges, slim cut with stilettos.

Have fun with this look - it isn't one you can take too seriously.

Next time I pull one of mine out of the wardrobe no doubt my husband will roll his eyes and ask whether I've been raiding children's clothing shops again. But he'll come around - probably just as they go out of fashion again!
