It barely feels like we've had a summer, so it's hard to believe winter stock is already landing in stores. But you'd better believe it as the woolly jackets and fur trim are landing thick and fast.
Like most winters, this year we'll see a lot of layering. Unlike mostyears, this year the layers will often be sheer and create larger-than-life silhouettes. You'll see plenty of chiffon, lace and silk, but it will be balanced with hard-edge leather and occasionally actual hardware - Jimmy D paired beautiful digitally printed georgette silk with spiked leather harnesses on the runway.
You'll probably want to tone it down slightly for the streets of provincial New Zealand - unless you thrive on the stares from strangers - but mixing and matching is definitely the over-arching theme this winter.
Prints are carrying through in many forms. Mix and match your stripes with spots, checks, florals and tartan.
Layer your jewellery, too - costume jewellery worn with fine jewellery is right on the money. Though, in the words of Project Runway's Tim Gunn, "be sure to edit well" so as not to look like a walking counter stand from an antique store. Statement necklaces and cocktail rings should be your go-to pieces.
Mix your textures as well, but amp everything up a notch. Pair soft, smooth textures with rough ones. Wear big, chunky knit scarves with supple leather pants (or shorts if you dare!) and that fuchsia, teal or cobalt relaxed T-shirt you thrashed all summer - yes, pops of bright colour are still about.
Speaking of texture, you'll also see a lot of fur and wool, both shearling and knit.
Glassons have fabulous wool coats with removable fur collars, giving you more flexibility in your wardrobe.
If you're going glam, go luxe with a soft faux (or vintage) fur in a deep rich hue - think Andrea Moore's dark red and purple collars/muffs from New Zealand Fashion Week last year. Alternatively, velvet will give an equally luxe feel without the animal on your conscience.
There is still a lot of 1940s and 50s inspiration around, with a focus on femininity - longer hemlines, dropped sleeves and an emphasis on the waist and bust. And don't forget your lady-like armour against the cold - hat and gloves. Wrist-length leather gloves come in a range of colours and a wide-brimmed floppy hat, fedora or even a wee cloche will do the trick perfectly.
