Easter is one time of the year when diets go completely out the window. Between the marshmallow eggs and the caramel centres, thoughts of going to the gym fade away. Especially when it's raining and bleak outside, and the best place to be is tucked up under your duvet.

Luckily, fashion is coming to the rescue of those who have bits they'd rather hide and those who've made the situation worse by piling on the chocolate over the weekend.

Optical illusion fashion is being sported by everyone from Kim Kardashian to Kate Moss. And though you don't have to go to the same extent as these runway models, you can use colour, shading and detailing to hone your curves and whittle your waist.

Glassons has a version of the hourglass illusion dress sported by Kate Winslet and Kim Kardashian earlier this year. With darker shades in the centre and lighter on the outside, it draws the eye in, and gives you the impression of a curvy, defined silhouette. It's great for nights out, or with leggings and a blazer for work.

Other optical illusions can be less obvious - capped sleeves soften broad shoulders, or a lighter panel in your midsection can make your legs look longer. Similarly, cut-outs around the shoulders and midriff draw attention to your bust - and the higher a waistline sits, the longer your legs will appear.

In the most simple terms, a flared skirt that falls to your knee will make legs and hips look a lot slimmer. Vertical and diagonal lines are a favourite optical illusion of many who want to look slimmer or taller. The closer together the stripes are, the more striking the effect. But think carefully about horizontal lines. The longer an eye travels up or down a body before it is interrupted by a horizontal line, the taller and leaner you look. This is why people who tuck their tops into their trousers often look wider than they really are.

Patterns can be a great way to draw attention to specific parts of your body. Houndstooth check, for example, confuses the eye - and bright, intricate detailing is very effective on sections you want to emphasise. And as anyone who has browsed wedding dresses will know, a cross-body pattern on a flowing dress adds flattering definition.
