Fashion: Embrace some lace

The other day I found myself staring at a photo of the cast of Full House on holiday at the beach. I wasn't staring because I used to love Full House, or because I was trying to figure out where the cast members are now (Wikipedia is good for that).

I was staring because I couldn't help but notice the similarities between what they were wearing and what is in stores around the country at the moment - bright colours, bold florals, cropped tops and loafers.

Now, while this isn't at all unusual - we all know fashion is cyclical - it's the first time I've been really conscious of styles from my youth coming around again.

I like to think I'm a child of the 80s, but I didn't really become aware of trends until the 90s.

And although I'm not a great fan of the neons and cropped tops, there is one 90s trend that I'll happily embrace again now. And that trend is lace.

It can be worn in a grungy, dressed-down sense with Dr Martens boots or hi-top Chuck Taylors, but I'm a firm believer in not wearing a trend the same way the second time around.

So this time lace will be ladylike. I'm talking pencil skirts and soft, skimming blouses. Ankle-grazing pants with a lace tank and ballet flats for Boxing Day sales, or fitted dresses with high heels for New Year's Eve.

For a really ladylike approach to lace, opt for pieces that are tailored or well-fitted. If you're not a girly-girl, opt for darker shades such as navy or black.

You can also amp up the va-va-voom factor by either not wearing a slip under your lace tops or having just a wee bit of lace bra showing under your tee or singlet.

If you're not sure about going full lace, think lace in the trim or detailing, such as lace shoes or socks.

And if you are worried about picking up a pretty lace piece on sale this week and not being able to wear it next year, then think again.

Several designers have returned to lace for winter next year, but in eye-poppingly bright shades, so bear that in mind.
