Every so often a season comes along where a colour trend is so glaringly obvious it seems to be everywhere you look. There are a couple of instances of that this winter, one of which is orange.
When New Zealand's designers gathered at Auckland's viaduct in September last year toshow their collections for this winter, it felt like every second collection featured the fruity hue. And now those collections are starting to land in store, I'm reminded of just how much orange we saw that week.
All shades of orange are acceptable this season - from mandarin and tangerine to morange and blood orange. From pale to a deep shade that's very nearly red. If orange is not a shade that entices you or one you're willing to don in large quantities, shoes, belts and bags are a fun way to introduce a smidge of it.
Prints are another easy way to introduce orange in small quantities. Juliette Hogan's silk tapestry print is a standout, on dresses and bags. The contrasting teal perfectly complements the orange floral. Fuchsia is another great pairing with bright orange, one which Dunedin label Company of Strangers have mastered in silk and wool. Silk is a perfect option right now while the weather is hardly wintry and wool will be glorious once the colder days finally kick in.
However you do it, orange feels bright and summery, even on the greyest of days, which will surely help this seemingly endless summer feel as though it extends right through to July. And no one in their right mind could say no to that.
