Fashion: A lasting affair with leather

For the past few years, the arrival of winter has heralded the arrival of leather. Before we go any further, I feel full disclosure is necessary.

I absolutely adore leather. I always have.

I love the way it smells, the way it feels and its classic rock'n'roll factor.

I'm not the only one, though.

The fashion industry seems to be addicted to leather as well - or to its look, at least. But don't worry, there is plenty of leather-look/PU for the vegans, eco-warriors and cash-strapped among us.

What makes this winter different to previous ones is the colour.

While many will be drawn to black, there is a veritable rainbow of leather looks available.

From Adrian Hailwood's gorgeous teal, to Salasai's deep, rich burgundy to forest green at Glassons, leather-lovers are definitely not limited to monochrome this year.

And although leather pants may not be appropriate for every situation, there's an equally large selection of leather details to give you just a hint of rock star.

From jacket lapels to pockets to contrast leather necklines and cuffs, there's something for everyone.

Be sure to consider texture when pulling your outfits together.

Leather gives you a great chance to create contrast - cosy knits with supple, buttery soft leather, or smooth cotton with crackled, worn leather.

I think one of the things I love most about leather is its versatility.

I love leather pencil skirts with silk blouses for ladylike elegance, or skinny jeans, a relaxed T and a leather biker jacket for a classic casual vibe.

However you plan to wear it, leather is one of those great fabrics that has something for all tastes and all times.

If you choose your garments carefully you'll wear them for years to come. Leather truly is classic.
