Forget High School Musical, Zac Efron's a big boy now.

The transformation from teen star to respected adult actor is always a difficult one and Efron, as a US Marine, does take some getting used to.

But with the days of Troy Bolton well behind him, Efron is slowly but surely picking up some meatier roles that will determine whether there is substance to add to his obvious boyish good looks.

And this is a serious role - Efron plays American marine sergeant Logan Thibault who has just returned from Afghanistan.

After three tours of the country, Logan is virtually a broken man. He has been through more than any man should be expected to.

The one thing that has been keeping Logan going is the photo of a mystery woman he found among the rubble following a deadly raid.

Over the ensuing months fate dealt him a kind hand and he had a number of narrow misses - luck he put down to his photo.

Back home in the US, Logan knows he must find this woman and thank her for keeping him alive.

Finding her in a small village, he develops an instant bond and takes on a job working for her.

Beth (Taylor Schilling) and her animals provide a wonderful healing environment for Logan and he begins to find peace again in his life.

Efron shows enough in his role here to tell us that he will be around for a while yet.

The Lucky One tells a heartwarming story about trying to rebuild a life after the horrors of war.
