DVD Review: The Deep Blue Sea (+trailer)

Grab a cup of tea and settle in for a journey back to 1950s Britain.

The Deep Blue Sea is slow to get off the mark but as we learn more of what is going on behind the scenes an intriguing storyline unfolds.

Centre of attention is Hester Collyer (Rachel Weisz) who is torn between the love of a good husband - Sir William Collyer (Simon Russell Beale) - and the excitement offered by handsome young former RAF pilot Freddie Page (Tom Hiddleston).

We join the story as Hester attempts suicide.

Confused and desperately sad about where her life has taken her, Hester wants no more.

We are then led through a series of flashbacks to learn how she got to this place in her life.

Hester was deeply adored by her older husband but the marriage lacked passion for her.

Meeting Freddie took Hester on a whirlwind ride of passion and excitement.

Freddie is now the shell of a man who lived through the drama and excitement of wartime. All that is left for him is booze, women and stories of his great aviation deeds.

Their affair is a tempestuous one and gives Hester some of the things she has craved but doesn't deliver in other areas.

Somewhere between the two men Hester will find the answer to her needs.

The Deep Blue Sea carefully traces her journey to find answers.
