Bernie Tiede (the wonderful Jack Black) is a fascinating character who verges on the unbelievable.

And make no mistake, this is Bernie's story - warts and all.

And it is a true story, which allows you to sit back and enjoy it knowing people like Bernie do exist.

And who better than Jack Black to portray the quirks of a man who was almost too good to be true.

When Bernie arrived in Carthage, Texas, the undertaker soon won over the townsfolk.

Nothing was too much for the gospel-singing tenor. In his late-30s and single, he was more than happy to help whoever was most in need.

He was everywhere and helped everyone. He was eternally cheerful and positive.

When he struck up a friendship with wealthy widow Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine), eyebrows were raised.

Was Bernie hopping aboard the gravy train or was he just helping out a lost soul?

Although Marjorie displays some hints of warmth, most of the townsfolk found her evil, unfriendly and ruthless.

And eventually, so did Bernie.

Angry and upset, Bernie does something that will change his life and the small Texan town forever.

Part-told through a series of interviews with townsfolk, Bernie is a weird journey into small-town America.
