Cheetah sets speed record on treadmill

In the future, you won't just have to worry about your chances of out-running a hungry cheetah.

A four-legged robotic version of the animal has just set the land speed record for a robot - 18mph on the treadmill.

Aptly named the Cheetah, the robot has been developed with funding from the US military's defence Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Cheetah broke a record set more than two decades ago by a two-legged robot but still has a long way to go as its developers want it to get faster and able to run outdoors.

Zombies on your tail

If you don't rate your chances of outrunning a robotic cheetah, you could always get some practice in by running away from flesh-eating zombies.

A new app called Zombies, Run! makes you outrun zombies and collect supplies to stay alive.

"When you're out running, you'll occasionally get chased by zombies and you'll need to speed up in response over the next minute," the app's co-creator Adrian Hon reportedly said.

The result is similar to interval training which is known for being difficult, so the idea is to give those who use the app more reason to run fast from time to time.

The app combines playing a game, where players have to uncover how the zombies came to be, and getting fit.

"You hear the sound of the gates of the base you live in going up and someone says 'the gates are broken - we've got an emergency' and suddenly the megaphone goes on and tells you to report to the gate immediately 'Go, go, go!'," Hon said.

Developers wanted to give runners more motivation and entertainment.

The app is available for iPhone and Android devices.

Fuzzy photo fix

Busy outrunning zombies when you see something you want to capture through the lens?

Don't worry about stopping to focus the camera.

A new camera that lets you focus after you've taken the photo is being sent out to American stores at the moment.

The Lytro has technology that allows the focal point of a camera to be changed after the photo has been snapped.

When Lytro pictures are shared online, the "light field engine" travels with each image so anyone who can look at them can also make the changes necessary.

The reviews have so far been positive with criticism mainly around the fact it can only be used with Mac computers.
