The author is an Indian woman who lives in the United States, as does Armati, one of the central characters in this gentle, compassionate novel of love, friendship and the tribulations of life.
Armati discovers she has cancer, so sets out to organise a reunion with her three closest friends,
all of whom live in India. As idealistic political activists at university in Bombay, the four were inseparable.
But things have changed for the foursome in the last 30 years. One has realised she is a lesbian. Another, Nishta, is locked in a bitter and oppressive marriage, disowned by her parents for marrying a Muslim.
The climax is quite dramatic, involving a daring escape engineered by Nishta's three friends. Graeme Barrow
