If this impressive and helpful book were read by every person of voting age in countries like the UK (at whom it is chiefly aimed), Germany, Italy, and New Zealand, the Greens share of the vote would rise dramatically. For this is a book on how to save - energy, money, buildings and structures of value, the environment, and the planet itself.
So just who is Kevin McCloud?
An author, broadcaster and designer, he has appeared in many a television series, is heavily involved in urban planning and regeneration, and his company is now involved in building sustainable housing schemes across the west of England. He also devised and launched the Great British Refurb to promote the retrofitting of Britain's 26 million homes to low-energy standards. And that's not all of it.
Despite the above, this book, which is liberally and attractively illustrated, is aimed at the individual. There is sound advice on how to heat the home as cheaply as possible, while being eco-friendly, how to utilise the kitchen in a similar manner, how to build homes which will store and save energy, what fuels to burn, how to create your own energy and even sell itand so on. There is an interesting chapter on hemp - how valuable it is and how versatile. One wonders why governments ban the growing of it for commercial uses.
This book is fascinating as well as helpful. Definitely recommended.
