When you read about the governmental misdeeds and police cover-ups in this book, it's a wonder it's been published at all.
Hilda Murrell was an academic who took over the family rose-growing business in England as a young woman. She stayed single, giving her time to focus on issues thatthreatened the world, such as the nuclear power loved by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. It was dangerous to oppose Thatcher, as others too found out, and Hilda was killed in 1984.
Robert Green, Murrell's nephew, now lives in New Zealand but for years he travelled England and Wales trying to find out who killed his aunt. The official police inquiries did not make sense, plus he was under suspicion as he had intimate knowledge of nuclear war potential from his time in the Royal Navy. His mail has been intercepted, files have gone missing, phones tapped, computers hacked.
This is an important book that shows how far those pushing for nuclear power will go: if those in control feel at risk, they'll murder little old ladies and anyone else who challenges them. Well written, with a touch of humanity to stop it being too clinical, A Thorn is an eye-opening warning to all.
